Charlie Kelman scored a sensational goal in the third minute of stoppage time to earn Southend United’s under 18 side a seventh consecutive victory in all competitions with a 3-2 win away to Cambridge United on Saturday.

Kelman fired home from long range just seconds after the U’s had equalised.

And Shrimpers coach Dave Huzzey was full of praise for the in-form forward.

“Charlie’s got that in his locker to produce those moments because he has a real calmness in front of goal and also his finishing technique is really good,” said Huzzey.

“He locks his body in and hits straight through the ball.

“We’re working on different types of finishing with him, but he’s got that one off to a tee!”

“When Charlie scored my emotions were the same as they were last Thursday in the FA Youth Cup at Leyton Orient.

“It was an unbelievable goal an it’s one of the best goals I’ve ever seen in a youth team game simply because of the timing and the importance.”

Saturday’s clash with Blues’ first since beating the O’s and they broke the deadlock in the 25th minute when Kelman teed up Terrell Egbri who netted for the sixth game in succession.

Sam Bennett equalised for the hosts before the Shrimpers regained the lead at the start of the second half with Jon Benton on target from the penalty spot.

Cambridge again replied with Joe Neal netting a late leveller before Blues instantly hit back with Kelman’s screaming shot sparking wild celebrations.
