SOUTHEND United manager Chris Powell feels his side are already in for a dogfight of a season.

The Shrimpers slipped to 14th in the League One standings following Saturday’s 2-1 defeat to Blackpool at Roots Hall.

And the setback, which came courtesy of Armand Gnanduillet’s 83rd minute header, left Powell a frustrated figure at the final whistle.

“This is a dogfight of a season already for us,” said Powell.

“It’s time for people to stand up and fight for the shirt.

“They have to do more, it’s as simple as that.

“I’m frustrated and angry but I can’t keep saying we’re unlucky. “ Blues came close to taking an early lead when Michael Kightly sent an excellent effort against the inside of the left post.

And Powell was initially quite pleased with how the Shrimpers were performing before Blackpool took the lead in the 14th minute with Oliver Turton firing home from close range.

“We started off well and I thought we were on top to start with but then we gave away a poor goal again,” said Powell.

“Then for some reason we became edgy and started to do some crazy things to play into their hands."

However, Blues were able to fight their way back into the game with Jason Demetriou heading home in the 74th minute.

But it was still not enough to stop the Shrimpers suffering a third League defeat in succession.

“We got back into the game through sheer hard work but the bit I don’t like is that we think the job is done when we still have to see it through,” said Powell.

“It’s happening too often and that must be about six points we could’ve had with a bit more stubbornness.

“A striker just can’t have a free header in the box like that, it just can’t happen.

“How many times does it happen for us? Not often.

“You have to get your body in there and defend your goal.

“We have to be streetwise too.”
