SOUTHEND Saxons’ winning run was ended by a 28-13 defeat against high-flying Colchester at Warners Bridge.

Southend went into the London One North clash on the back of four successive wins and seemed well placed to secure another victory when Colchester had a player sent off shortly before Saxons made it 13-13.

But, despite having fought back from 13-0 down, Southend were unable to complete the comeback.

And that left Saxons’ director of rugby Josh Ward with mixed emotions at the final whistle.

“It’s an odd one and it certainly feels like it’s a defeat which has been self inflicted,” said Ward, whose side sit eighth.

“Colchester are a good side and took their chances well to their credit.

“We started well though and played with a buzz and tempo.

“But in the second quarter we made some poor decisions in key areas of the field.”

However, Southend were able to improve after the break.

“The second half was huge,” said Ward.

“We rallied well, stuck to our processes and from 13-0 down got back level.

“But our decision making at the contact area cost us. Nine penalties against a good side is never going to allow you to win the game.”

But Ward was keen to remain upbeat.

“I’m immensely proud of this group,” said Ward.

“We are creating a club culture where people are prepared to work unbelievably hard for each other in order to succeed.

“The boys are gutted, but it was the test we wanted, to see where we are.

“And, after Saturday, it’s clear to see we are going in the right direction.”

Second-placed Colchester, who have been beaten just once this season, started strongly at Warners Bridge and scored two penalties and a try to lead 13-0.

However, Southend hit back after the break with Tom Ramsey kicking a penalty before Ross Stalley also scored a try.

Colchester were then reduced to 14 men when their number eight saw red for a punch off the ball shortly before another Ramsey penalty levelled the scores. However, the visitors fought back to take the victory.
