SOUTHEND United manager Chris Powell wants to rekindle happy memories of his first game in charge when the Shrimpers host Scunthorpe tonight.

Blues sit 15th in the League One standings having suffered four defeats in succession.

And Powell is therefore keen to secure all three points against the Iron, just like he did right at the start of his spell in charge when a late Michael Turner goal saw the Shrimpers triumph 3-2.

“That first game was a great day and it gave everyone a lift, which is what we need now,” said Powell.

“It’s similar circumstances really because the side hadn’t won for a few games before that day either.

“Hopefully we can turn it around again and get us into a positive frame of mind.”

Blues’ latest setback came at struggling AFC Wimbledon on Saturday.

But Powell is doing all he can to keep spirits high.

“We’ve got to remain as positive as we can,” said the 49-year-old.

“We know we’re in a very difficult and tough place at present and that we’ve let ourselves and the club down.

“But individually and collectively we’ve got to stick together as a group because we know we can get results.”
