SOUTHEND United manager Chris Powell was pleased to goalkeeper Mark Oxley play a crucial part in tonight’s Checkatrade Trophy win at Luton Town.

Oxley saved two of the Hatters’ spot-kicks to ensure the Shrimpers progressed to the last 16 of the competition with a 4-2 win on penalties.

And Powell was delighted to see Oxley back to his back just four days after the shot-stopper was punished for a mistake in a 4-2 defeat against Barnsley in the FA Cup.

“Mark did what he does best,” said Powell.

“He made himself big, he made the saves and I’m really pleased for him.

“After the weekend he felt down and I’m sure there were people saying he shouldn’t play but I’m his manager and I’ve got to back and give him the support he needs.

“You have to bounce back and show character and that’s what Mark has done.”
