SOUTHEND United boss Chris Powell was a frustrated figure following the Shrimpers’ 2-0 defeat at Portsmouth.
An own goal from Blues centre-back Michael Turner and a header from Jamal Lowe saw the League One leaders secure an eighth win in succession.
And Powell admitted it had been a difficult for the Shrimpers.
“It was a tough day in the end and we didn’t get the start we wanted,” said Powell.
“To go 1-0 down so early put us on the back foot.
“We knew it would be hard here but we wanted to stay in the game for longer.
“I got into them at half-time and credit to the players that we were the ones who tried to force the issue in the second half.
“We had plenty of the ball but never really troubled their keeper.
We kept them relatively quiet but the damage was already done.”
And Powell was also quick to praise Portsmouth.
“You have to give Portsmouth credit,” said the 49-year-old.
“They’re a decent side.”
