SOUTHEND United boss Chris Powell says his side are angry heading into tomorrow’s clash with Accrington Stanley at Roots Hall.

The Shrimpers have been beaten in five of their last six games in League One.

And Powell knows his players are determined to get their stuttering season back on track.

“They’re angry at the moment and I was angry at the weekend too because I want better for us,” said Powell, whose side are 15th in the standings.

“But the only way we can do better is by striving to push ourselves.

“If they’re applying themselves properly and wearing that shirt with pride I’ll be happy.”

The injury-hit Shrimpers - who could be missing as many as 11 players tomorrow - saw off Scunthorpe United 2-0 in their previous home game in League One.

And Powell is keen to build on that triumph against Stanley.

“Our home form will turn around at some point and it would be great if we could build on the result we had against Scunthorpe,” said the Blues boss.

“We’ve got to be set up right and we’ve got to win the game.

“We need to create and convert our chances and at the other end we’ve got to do our best to get a clean sheet too.”

Accrington have also been out of form in recent weeks and are currently the only team below the Shrimpers in the League One form guide.

John Coleman’s side have taken just two points from their last six games.

But Powell still expects Accrington to go for it at Roots Hall.

“Accrington are very open and they go for it,” said Powell.

“It’s not in their set up to go for a point.

“They will try and frustrate us by playing their football but we’ve got to be able to deal with that.”

And Powell also has every confidence in whoever he selects.

“Every player we have can play at this level, even if they’re 18 or a senior player,” said the Blues boss.

“We need all 11 to be at it but of course confidence can be low when results aren’t great.

“The situation we have isn’t ideal but we have to get on with it.

“I’ve always done that as a player, a coach and now as a manager as well.”
