WESTCLIFF will be looking to start the New Year in style when they head to Hertford in the London & SE Premier Division tomorrow.

Westcliff are currently third in the standings - just five points behind table-topping Wimbledon - after a fine first half to the season.

But scrum half Henry Morrant is keen to kick on and continue Westcliff’s fine season with another good result in the team’s first outing since beating Sidcup in mid-December.

“We’ve had a couple of sessions after the New Year so we should be ready to kick on now,” said Morrant.

“It can obviously be difficult coming back after a few weeks off over Christmas.

“But I don’t think it should have too much of an impact on us as a group as it’s not too far from some of our boys’ usual diets!

“But hopefully we can keep up the good form, get some decent away form back and finish the second half of the season strongly.”

However, fourth-placed Hertford will be tough to beat tomorrow.

Hertford are one position and five points below Westcliff.

But Morrant insists Westcliff are desperate to complete a double over their hosts having beaten them 42-10 at the Gables earlier on this season.

“We got a pretty decent result at the beginning of the year at home against them,” said Morrant.

“But they caught some good form before Christmas so it should be a tough match.”

In London One South tomorrow, fifth-placed Thurrock resume their season at home to 12th-placed Tottonians while, in London Two North East, Basildon will be hoping the New Year can signal a change in their fortunes.

Basildon are currently bottom of the table and will be looking to spring a surprise at second-placed Romford & Gidea Park.

Also in London Two North East, South Woodham Ferrers host fellow strugglers Harlow in an important contest towards the foot of the table.

Canvey Island host Braintree in London Three Essex.
