SOUTHEND United manager Chris Powell has been given the green light to strengthen his injury-hit squad during the January transfer window.

Powell is keen to bolster his options and has been told he will be backed by chairman Ron Martin.

“Ron has been very supportive since day one and especially now,” said Powell.

“He recognises the position we’re in and how many good players we can’t use until next season.

“Financially he’s said he will help us get the players we need to give us all a boost and the fans as well.

“I’m in constant dialogue with Ron and he recognises we have a few deficiencies at this current time.

“He still wants us to help recognise players we need moving forward.”

But Powell also knows he will face stiff competition to make signings.

"There are two players we're in for already and three or four other clubs are in for them now too," said the Blues boss.

"I don't know what League the other teams are in everyone is after players at this time so we will face some competition."
