SOUTHEND United striker Simon Cox has revealed how Charlie Kelman told him to shoot from long range just minutes before his outrageous debut goal.

Kelman scored from inside his own half in Saturday’s 3-2 defeat to Plymouth Argyle at Roots Hall.

And the 17-year-old had already told Cox of his intention to shoot from distance.

“Charlie told me he was going to do it just moments before the goal,” said Cox.

“I was next to him in a wall when Plymouth had a free-kick and he said ‘look how far out their keeper is’.

“He said to shoot from distance given the chance and then just two minutes later he went and did that so I just looked up and thought, fair play.

“It was a great goal and if you're going to score a worldie like that you might as well do it for your first goal."

And Cox has already been impressed by Kelman.

"Everything about Charlie is way above his young age," said Cox.

"But he has to keep on listening to the right people."
