SOUTHEND United boss Chris Powell insists Charlie Kelman must be carefully managed to fulfil his potential with the Shrimpers.

Kelman netted a stunning strike from inside his own half on his League debut against Plymouth Argyle last weekend.

But Powell was keen to stress the wonder-goal was not the reason the 17-year-old striker has now signed a professional contract at Roots Hall.

“I’ve got to say right here, right now that his new deal was nothing to do with the goal he got,” said Powell.

“He’s been in and around the group for a while and I gave him his debut in the Checkatrade Trophy earlier on in the season.

“He actually trained with us last year before he even joined us full-time too.

“I saw him and asked if we could take him out of school for a couple of days which, fortunately, we were able to do.

“He’s been a real find and a real bright spark in a really tough time for us.”

Kelman looks set to again be selected in the Shrimpers squad for tomorrow’s clash at Bradford City.

And Powell is hopeful the youngster can continue to show his immense promise.

“Myself, the staff, Ricky (Duncan) and Ron (Martin) have discussed Charlie several times and we have a player who could have a really good future with us,” said Powell.

“He’s handled things pretty well so far and we’re really pleased he’s put pen to paper.

“We won’t ask too much of him though. He’s still a youth team player and we’ll have to make sure we get the balance right.

“We have to be careful with him.”
