STEPHEN Humphrys started his ‘make or break’ spell at Southend United with a stunning two goal debut at Bradford City on Saturday.

Humphrys, who sealed his switch from Fulham on the morning of the match, scored twice in the Shrimpers’ fine 4-0 win at Valley Parade.

And the 21-year-old was thrilled to start his spell with Blues in such fine fashion.

“I spoke to my family about the move and this is my big chance really so I’m delighted to have got off to a good start,” said Humphrys.

“I see this as make or break for me really and I know I have to take this opportunity with everything I’ve got.”

Humphrys, who has signed a two-and-a-half year deal with Southend, had previously spent time on loan with Shrewsbury Town.

But the forward is pleased to have made a permanent switch to the Shrimpers.

“It’s sometimes difficult to feel a part of things when you’re on loan but I already feel a massive part of things here,” said Humphrys.

“Everyone is delighted for everyone in the changing room and the manager and the lads have all made me feel welcome so I’m really happy.”

Humphrys scored twice in the second half to help the Shrimpers secure their biggest win of the season so far.

And the forward insisted he did not have to think twice about joining 10th-placed Blues just two weeks after his season-long loan spell with Scunthorpe United was cut short.

“I don’t know if the manager had watched me for Fulham under-23s but I got a call to say Southend were interested and I jumped at the chance to sign,” said Humphrys.

“I went back to Fulham after my time at Scunthorpe, which was disappointing. I’ve had to take a few knock-backs but I’ve kept working hard.

“I spoke to the manager and we seemed to be on the same page so everything fell into place quite quickly.”

And Humphry has already been impressed by his new team-mates.

“Credit to all the lads because everyone was fantastic all round,” said the striker.

“But we want to carry this on now because it’s not too late to make a move for the play-offs.”
