SOUTHEND United manager Chris Powell wants to build on the progress made in his first year in charge, starting with tomorrow’s clash against Luton Town at Roots Hall.

Powell celebrated 12 months as Blues boss this week.

But, despite being pleased with the improvements he has made, the 49-year-old is still hungry for more.

“A year ago we were fifth from bottom but now we’re 11th and things could really have been better than that,” said Powell.

“I do feel as though we’re heading in the right direction and I do feel we’ve improved.

“But that’s not enough and I want more.

“I want the second year to be even better than the first.

“I want more points and that quest starts tomorrow in what will be a difficult game against Luton Town.”

Blues head into the game sitting 11th in the League One standings.

But Powell is keen to help the Shrimpers progress.

"We've been a League One, League Two club regularly over the years with the odd stint in the Championship, said Powell.

"Our infastructure doesn’t lead to that (the Championship) right now but Ron (Martin) is trying to head that way and we have to a football club which is heading towards that.

"How quickly we can get there nobody knows but we have to be positive in our outlook.

"We, alongside many others in League One, are looking to push and push."
