SOUTHEND United’s poor record against League One’s top teams continued with a 1-0 defeat against table-topping Luton Town this afternoon.

Matty Pearson’s first half header handed the Hatters all three points at Roots Hall.

And the solitary strike also meant the Shrimpers have lost all eight of their matches against teams in the top seven so far this season.

Blues came into the clash on the back of a resounding 4-0 win at Bradford City but found it tough going against a well-drilled Luton.

The visitors came close to taking the lead in the 20th minute when Luke Berry’s pass created a fine chance for Jack Stacey in the right hand side of the penalty area but the Hatters right-back saw his effort diverted wide of the left post by Shrimpers shot-stopper Nathan Bishop.

But, nine minutes later, the high-flying Hatters broke the deadlock when James Justin’s right wing corner found the head of Pearson who nodded home from eight yards.

In reply, Shrimpers striker Stephen Humphrys soon headed Sam Hart’s left wing cross straight at James Shea but Luton remained in control at the start of the second with Sonny Bradley having a low volley smartly saved by Bishop.

The Hatters again came close to doubling their lead on the hour mark when Justin fired inches over from 20 yards.

But, in a bid to get back into the game, Blues boss Chris Powell made his first change of the afternoon in the 70th minute with Charlie Kelman replacing Dru Yearwood.

Moments after the alteration, Simon Cox saw his well struck left footed shot tipped wide of the left post by Shea but Luton soon hit back with James Collins firing over from close range.

The Shrimpers made a second change six minutes from time with Stephen McLaughlin replacing Mantom but the hosts failed to threaten late on as Luton comfortably held on to record another victory.
