SOUTHEND United head to Doncaster Rovers tonight with manager Chris Powell demanding a repeat of the Shrimpers’ battling showing at Charlton Athletic.

Blues dug deep with 10 men to secure a hard-fought 1-1 at the Addicks on Saturday.

And Powell now wants to see a similar display at the Keepmoat Stadium this evening.

“We have to go again now,” said the Blues boss.

“The players were magnificent in adversity at Charlton and put in a huge effort.

“I couldn’t have asked for any more but now it’s about doing it again and again.

“We need that spirit and that fight and that’s what I will be asking for in the remaining 15 games.

“But we’ll go to Doncaster and give it our best.”

Blues slipped to 14th in the League One standings following Saturday’s stalemate but Doncaster head into tonight’s clash still pushing for promotion.

Grant McCann’s side are currently sixth in the table, with just one defeat in their last eight games.

And Powell knows Rovers will be tough to beat this evening in their final outing before this weekend’s FA Cup fifth round clash with Premier League side Crystal Palace.

“Grant has done well with them,” said Powell.

“They have a big game against Palace in the FA Cup on Sunday but they might see this as a bigger game because of the position they’re in at the moment in the League.

“They will want to keep their form going and they have some very good players.

“They have a style that hasn’t changed and we’ll have to be ready for that.”

Blues will be without the suspended Dru Yearwood tonight following the midfielder’s red card at Charlton Athletic at the weekend.

But Powell must decide whether or not to make further changes to his team.

“Michael Kightly is a footballer who understands the game but can he go again after not playing for a while or do you freshen it up?,” said Powell.

“It’s always a hard balancing act as a manager.

“You want energy and we certainly showed that along with real running power at the weekend.”

On loan left-back Sam Hart has also been passed fit for the game.

The defender went off with a knee problem during the second half at Charlton Athletic on Saturday but was back in training yesterday.

However, winger Harry Bunn is not yet ready to return to action for the Shrimpers.
