SOUTHEND United’s under 15 side must beat Stevenage in their final EFL Floodlit Cup group stage to reach the quarter-finals.

Blues’ youngsters drew 1-1 with Barnet in a game played at Great Wakering Rovers.

And Shrimpers coach Danny Heath was pleased for his players to be given the opportunity to play at Burroughs Park.

“We would like to thank Dave Patient, Dan Ellis and all Great Wakering Rovers staff for having us and allowing us to host the fixture, we were all appreciative of their support and the facilities given to us,” said Heath.

“It would have been great for the lads’ development, learning to play in front of a crowd and under the lights and we can’t thank Great Wakering Rovers enough for allowing the lads that opportunity.

“The lads naturally and rightly so wanted to win the game but the message to the lads before the game was to try and put in a performance which reflected the levels and quality that we expect to see.

“Also short term for their performances to show potential to be a scholar and long term to ultimately be a professional footballer at the club.”

However, the Shrimpers were left frustrated after having to settle for a share of the spoils.

The lads were naturally disappointed to not have won the game and for not performing so well but that’s a good thing as it shows that they care and have that passion and desire to want to be better,” said Heath.

“The scenario that now stands is great for the lads’ development as they could find themselves in these situations further down the lines in their careers as it is similar to may be needing a point or win to win a championship or qualify for the play offs.”

Blues will head to Stevenage’s first team ground, Broadhall Way for the fixture on Wednesday March 6, kick off 7pm.

And Heath is keen to secure victory.

“Yes the ultimate aim is to go to Stevenage to win but we want the lads to show the confidence to manage and control the game,” said Heath,

“We want them to come off the pitch at the end knowing they have performed as well as they can or they worked hard at their game to become even better.

“That is what is of most importance for their development and to us.

“It would be great if we could have a few fans there too.”
