SOUTHEND United striker Simon Cox has been shortlisted for League One’s player of the month award for February.

The in-form forward scored four goals in five outings during the month, including a well-taken hat-trick in an exciting 3-3 draw against Portsmouth at Roots Hall.

Cox’s trio helped the Shrimpers fight back from three goals down to secure a share of the spoils.

The striker’s goal-getting antics were made even more impressive given Blues’ poor form during February.

Chris Powell’s side failed to win any of their five games during a disappointing month and took just three points from a possible 15.

Cox has now netted 15 goals for the Shrimpers this season but he faces tough competition for the player of the month award.

Barnsley goalkeeper Adam Davies secured three clean sheets in five outings for the Tykes as they continued their push for automatic promotion.

Sunderland’s Aidan McGeady has also been selected on the shortlist.

The attacking midfielder scored four goals in six outings for the Black Cats, who went through the whole of February unbeaten in their bid to return to the Championship.

The final nominee is Fleetwood Town defender Harry Souttar.

The youngster, who is on loan from Stoke City, has helped Town secure three clean sheets in five games.

The winner of the award will be announced on Friday morning.
