CANVEY Island were comprehensively beaten 3-0 by AFC Sudbury.

Former East Thurrock United winger Reece Harris claimed a brace of goals, while Liam Bennett was also on target on the MEL Group Stadium’s artificial surface.

And, as a result, the Gulls were consigned to a sixth Isthmian North defeat in their last seven outings.

Canvey fell behind inside 11 minutes. Ross Crane’s shot was drifting wide of the target and, with the Gulls’ defence static, Harris stole in at the back post and fired home from close range.

Sudbury doubled their lead six minutes before the interval.

Right-back Bennett advanced towards gold and sent an accurate drive into the bottom corner of the net.

Harris completed the scoring 12 minutes after the break.

A through ball put Harris in behind the Canvey defence, who were very high up the pitch.

Harris had acres of space to run into and the winger curled a low effort past Gulls goalkeeper Harry Palmer and saw it kiss the post on the way in.

After falling to a three-goal deficit, Canvey failed to take advantage of a number of opportunities to grab a consolation.

Josh Hutchinson headed wide from close range, while Sam Collins, Martin Tuohy and Frankie Merrifield were all thwarted by Sudbury goalkeeper Paul Walker.
