JOHN Sussex was overjoyed after claiming his first win in charge of Basildon United.

A second half fightback allowed the Bees to seal a 3-1 victory over Romford, with Daniel Cheema, Callum Taylor and Joe Paxman on target for the hosts.

And Sussex felt his side were deserving of the three points.

Sussex said: “It was an important game because we would have been under a bit of pressure after our recent results if Romford had have won the game.

“But, having got that win, we are now 14 points clear of the relegation places with seven games to go.

“The wind played a big factor in the game and they had the wind in their favour in the first half.

“They went direct and used long throws to their advantage.

“Their goal was very scrappy and we couldn’t get any momentum going in the first half.

“But we knew that if we used the wind and got into the final third then it would all come together in the second half.

“We deserved the three points and every manager is eager to get their first win in charge, so it was nice to get that.”

George Woodward gave Romford, the Isthmian North’s bottom club, a 12th minute lead but Cheema levelled matters soon before the hour mark.

Taylor then gave Basildon the lead from the penalty spot and Paxman ensured the win five minutes later.
