MORE than 900 young rugby players headed to Westcliff to battle it out in the club’s latest mini’s festival.

Fourteen different clubs sent teams to take to the field, with matches taking place in all age groups between under-six and under-12.

And Westcliff’s club chairman Pete Jones was happy to see the day run so smoothly.

“As a club it was fantastic to see everything go well and to see so many clubs and youngsters enjoying their rugby,” said Jones.

“We’ve had a lot of positive feedback, with many of the teams saying this was the biggest festival for mini’s that they had ever been to.

“We were really pleased with the way it went but a big thank you must go to the mini’s chairman Tim Ablethorpe for all that he did.

“We would also like to thank all the players, parents, coaches, supporters and all the helpers who gave up their time.

“They all helped to make it a great and enjoyable day for everyone involved.”

Due to the new RFU guidelines, none of the teams were declared as winners as the teams battled it out on a round robin basis before all players were presented with a medal.

And Jones felt the festival was Westcliff’s best one yet.

“We’ve been running this for a number of years now and I would say this is the biggest one we’ve had so far,” said Jones.
