JOHN White helped Southend United secure a season saving win against Sunderland with a broken arm.

The defender, who scored Blues’ first goal in the 2-1 victory against Sunderland, suffered the injury shortly after Stephen Humphrys’ winner.

But, with added on time, White played more than 10 minutes with the broken bone and Shrimpers boss Kevin Bond felt the centre-back’s character was exactly what was required.

“I think everyone thought John was down time-wasting but he actually broke his arm and played on with it,” said Bond.

“We had used all three of our substitutes but he showed the spirit we needed, just like Stephen Humphrys and everyone else did too.

“It was great.”
