ANDY McGarry insists he is not thinking of promotion despite seeing his Old Southendian & Southchurch side make a terrific start to the Division Two campaign.

Old Boys have won all three of their opening fixtures, with their latest triumph coming in the form of a five-wicket victory over Horndon-on-the-Hill.

But McGarry is refusing to get carried away with his team’s exploits.

The Old Southendian captain said: “As all years, the first aim is to get six wins on the board, which relieves pressure at the other end of the table and allows you to play with a lot more freedom.

“Beyond that it is a case of taking each game as it comes and winning as many as you can.

“If you take care of the little things game by game, the big things take care of themselves.

“As for promotion, it is a little early to be talking about that!”

Old Southendian boast a 100 per cent winning record and currently sit second in the standings.

Benfleet, who are at the Division Two summit having won promotion last term, are the only other side yet to falter.

And McGarry, whose side are just six points adrift of the league leaders, is pleased to be hot on Benfleet’s heels in the early stages of the season.

McGarry added: “I am delighted that we have won our opening three games of the season and given ourselves a platform to build from.

“There is nothing better for the atmosphere within a club than starting well and winning a few games.

“It’s good that it has been replicated in the club’s other sides this year as well.

“It is a great platform to have and hopefully we will continue to be able to build on that.”

McGarry took four wickets and recorded 15 runs as Old Southendian swept Horndon aside at the weekend.

Ahmed Khawaja and Matt Austin claimed three and two scalps respectively, while Khawaja also struck 28 runs with the bat and McGarry is pleased to see a number of individuals performing impressively.

“Things have been going well so far, with me taking a few wickets and getting some runs when it has mattered,” admitted McGarry.

“But, with myself, Ahmed and Matt, it’s been good that three of us have hit the ground running with bat and ball.

“I’m also confident as we go through the year that there are a number of other players in the side who can make significant and hopefully match-winning contributions.”
