ANDY McGarry has been left astonished with Old Southendian & Southchurch’s start to the Division Two campaign.

Old Boys are the league leaders and find themselves 35 points clear of nearest challengers Benfleet ahead of tomorrow’s clash with South Woodford.

But McGarry insists he is not getting carried away.

“Nobody wins anything with two thirds of the season left,” said the Old Southendian captain.

“But it’s been an amazing start, far beyond what anyone realistically expected before the start of the season.

“Given our pre-season targets, we are lucky to be in a position where we can pretty much just enjoy the next 11 weeks and see where we end up.

“More than anything, I think we’re just enjoying each other’s personal successes as well as what we’re doing as a team and that attitude nearly always leaves you in a good place.”

Old Boys will be the overwhelming favourites to triumph at Garon Park tomorrow as South Woodford prop up the Division Two table.

South Woodford have tasted victory on just one occasion this term, but McGarry knows the threats they will pose.

McGarry added: “We will simply be looking to keep doing what we’re doing, enjoying ourselves and playing with the confidence the guys deserve to have.

“Any team can win on any given day in our league, so you should never take anyone lightly.”

Elsewhere, Benfleet will be looking to close the gap on Old Southendian by returning to winning ways at Frenford tomorrow.

A defeat to McGarry’s outfit last time out resulted in Benfleet, who were promoted from Division Three last term, being condemned to back-to-back losses.

And captain Rob Zammit has challenged his side to return to winning form against a Frenford side that also lost last weekend.

“It was disappointing to lose to Old Southendian,” said Zammit.

“We were competitive in the first half of the match, but our batting let us down. We gave away cheap wickets and that meant we couldn’t build partnerships.

“Now it’s about staying calm and remaining positive after the start we made to the season.”

Meanwhile, Wickford are set to make the short trip to Orsett & Thurrock this weekend.

The hosts will go into the encounter full of confidence after emerging victorious in each of their last two outings.

While Wickford were beaten last time out, they are just eight points adrift of Orsett and sit seventh in the standings.
