NEW-BOY Ben Lloyd is setting his sights high at Southend Saxons this season.

The fly-half has signed after leaving London & SE Premier Division side Hertford.

And Lloyd is expecting a successful first season at Warners Bridge.

“People are sometimes a bit scared to say promotion is the aim but I didn’t come here to lose games,” said Lloyd.

“I want to try and win every game we have and for me that’s the target.

“It’s bullish but promotion is what we want.”

Lloyd began pre-season training with the Saxons this week.

And he has already been pleased with what he has seen.

“I’ve been impressed,” said Lloyd.

“I’ve got one session in the bag and things were already starting to click so I’ve been really impressed so far.

“You never really know what you’re going to be walking into until you start playing games but the early signs are really positive and I’m glad to be involved.”

Lloyd has also previously played for Barking and Ealing.

But he opted to switch to Southend after holding talks with the club’s director of rugby Josh Ward.

“He was very persistent but in a good way and he told me the whole way along they were keen to have me here,” said Lloyd.

“His enthusiasm swayed me and I know a few of the boys here already too.

“I bounced things off them and everything I heard was really positive.”

And Lloyd is also excited to be experiencing something new with the London One North club.

“For me personally I was at the stage where I needed a new challenge in my career,” said Lloyd.

“I had been at Hertford for three seasons and things didn’t come together in terms of winning promotion.

“I’ve never been promoted before and it’s something I’m really keen to do because some people never do that in their careers so I’m pleased to be part of the project Josh has got here.

“He sold me their vision and I’m happy to be involved.”

Lloyd will continue to train alongside his new team-mates at Warners Bridge before lining up in the Saxons’ first pre-season game of the summer when they head to Bury St. Edmunds in mid-August.
