SOUTHEND United’s under 23 side continued their preparations for the forthcoming season with a 2-1 defeat at Colchester United yesterday.

The Shrimpers’ goal came courtesy of an own goal following Eren Kinali’s header from Terrell Egbri’s cross.

But Blues' academy manager Ricky Duncan was disappointed by the team's defending.

"It was an OK performance but we must stop giving away poor goals," said Duncan.

"It was an even game and both teams were limited to shots on goal.

"It was a shame to lose on a penalty but at the other end we need to be better to start creating chances."
