HARRY Wheeler insists Billericay Town do not have disciplinary issues.

A stoppage time penalty from Jake Robinson, following Jordan Parkes’ first half opener, allowed Town to record a 2-1 victory over Welling United.

But, just three days after Tambeson Eyong was dismissed in the defeat to Chippenham Town, Charlie Wassmer was sent off and Billericay were made to finish the National League South clash with 10 men.

Boss Wheeler said: “I don’t think discipline is a problem.

“I just think both of the red cards have been for hard tackles.

“The first one was slightly mistimed and the lad got there first.

“Charlie’s was just a little excessive.

“I thought he could have got to the ball, but he didn’t think he could get there so he tried to bring the other leg around to get there early and it has ended up being a two-footed tackle.

“Sometimes that happens in the moment, but the lad wasn’t actually hurt so it wasn’t too reckless from Charlie.

“Discipline is not a massive concern for me because I think we have a very professional group.”

Parkes grabbed his first goal since joining the club from Hemel Hempstead Town in the summer, but Welling levelled matters thanks to Gavin McCallum’s strike.

It looked as though it would finish honours even at the Steel Team Stadium, but ex-Billericay captain Rob Swaine brought down Moses Emmanuel and the hosts were awarded a 90th minute penalty.

Robinson stepped up and confidently dispatched the spot-kick to seal all three points.

And Wheeler was pleased to see his side grab a last-gasp winner for the second time in four outings.

“Keeping on going until the final whistle is a demand of our standards,” added Wheeler.

“We have a competitive squad that want to do themselves justice.

“I ask them for two things every time they go out. They are to work harder than the other team and not to give in when things are not going their way.

“I want them to keep pushing, doing the right things and stay calm because it only takes a second to score a goal, so I tell the players to keep believing that we will get the goal we need.

“We have already got six points as a result of two games where we have scored the winner in the last minute.”

Billericay have won three of their opening four encounters of the campaign.

And Wheeler has been encouraged by his side’s early season form.

Wheeler admitted: “I’m pleased with the start and I would have taken winning three out of four tough games if it had been offered to me at the start of the season.

“It was a vital win because Welling are a team that, I believe, will be fighting for promotion.

“I thought that was our best performance so far this season.”
