SOUTHEND United manager Kevin Bond has revealed Brandon Goodship asked to come off against Rochdale.
Goodship’s departure was jeered by frustrated Shrimpers fans 19 minutes from the end of the 3-0 defeat at Roots Hall.
But Bond said the decision was taken out of his hands.
“The supporters booed when I took Brandon off because he looked a threat for us and I would agree,” said Bond.
“But he came over to me and said he was gone and that I had to take him off.”
And Bond was also keen to explain his selection in the centre of the park.
“The supporters are booing Luke Hyam wondering why he’s playing but he’s the only midfield player I’ve got,” said Bond.
“I’m not being disrespectful to Luke but we have three midfielders available.
“Rob Kiernan hasn’t played since the Gillingham game so we had three midfielders today.
“Sam Mantom was out and so was Timothee Dieng.
“The supporters might not like it but that’s what we have.”
