SOUTHEND Saxons and Rochford Hundred both kicked off the new rugby seasons with victories.
But Westcliff suffered a narrow defeat in their first National Two South fixture.
Westcliff led 19-3 against Dings Crusaders at the break but the visitors fought back to win 25-24.
In London & SE Premier Division, Rochford Hundred, who have won promotion in their last two seasons, on 28-11 at Tring.
And it was also a memorable opening day for Southend Saxons in London One North.
Southend led 26-7 against Old Haberdashers at the break before the visitors hit back in the second half, with the wind behind them, to make it 26-26.
However, a late penalty from Ben Lloyd put Saxons back ahead before a controversial try from Tom Richards sealed a 36-26 victory.
