SOUTHEND Saxons slumped to their first defeat of the London One North season, losing 37-19 at Eton Manor.

Saxons went into the game on the back of three successive victories.

But they were unable to keep the winning run going, much to the frustration of scrum half Harry Branch.

“It was terribly frustrating,” said Branch.

“We didn’t perform to our potential and unfortunately we paid the price for that.

“But fair play to Eton Manor. They took all their chances and dominated the ruck area.

“Of course it’s always frustrating to lose and it’s not the outcome you ever want from a game.

“But we will learn our lessons from Saturday and move on.”

Southend are now fourth in the standings.

And Branch is keen to bounce back to winning ways when second-placed Colchester head to Warners Bridge this weekend.

“The squad understands that this isn’t what our group is about this year so we will be having a massive week on the training field,” said Branch.

“We have to put out a huge performance this weekend against Colchester so please come down and pack the Bridge.”

Southend started slowly against Eton Manor and found themselves 17-0 down at half-time.

Tom Day, Werner Nel and Simon Wasley all scored tries for Saxons after the break.

But Southend director of rugby Josh Ward felt Eton Manor were worthy winners.

“No complaints, we were nowhere near where we needed to be to compete and got what we deserved,” said Ward.

“Eton Manor were excellent and executed their chances well.

“But we lacked intent and lost the gain line battle, a key component to any match.

“We were second best in most areas, which is hugely disappointing.”

However, Ward is keen to remain upbeat.

“You don’t win anything in September and you don’t lose anything in September,” said Ward.

“There’s plenty to address ahead of next week and plenty of things we’ll learn. We’re looking for a big response and I’m confident our group will do just that.”
