TOM Hopper will be hoping to hail his hero when Southend United head to Sunderland tomorrow.

Hopper grew up idolising former Newcastle United forward Alan Shearer.

And Hopper is keen to again mimic the ex-England marksman’s trademark celebration when he makes his own appearance in the north-east tomorrow.

“Growing up it was Alan Shearer I idolised and that’s why I celebrate with one hand up, just like he used to, every time I score,” said Hopper.

“Arsenal was actually my team as a kid but it was Shearer I looked up to most because he was a great player.

“I’ve always done that celebration and of course it would be great to do it again tomorrow.

“But it’s getting the result that matters most because we want to start putting things right.”

Blues make the long trip to the Stadium of Light sitting second from bottom in the standings.

But Hopper - who spent close to a year out of action with a cruciate ligament injury before returning last month - is looking forward to the clash.

“Sunderland away was actually the first game after I got the injury last season so it’s good to finally be getting the chance to go there,” said Hopper.

“We’ve had a lot of games but after being out for almost a year I’m loving that that’s the case.”

Hopper, who had scored seven goals in 14 games before the injury last October, started three games in the space of nine days after returning to action. But the 25-year-old feels fresh enough to feature again against Sunderland.

“I’m enjoying the games and I feel fine which is again testament to all of the work the medical team have done with me,” said Hopper, who scored on his first start back at Tranmere Rovers.

“My body is getting used to everything again but it’s fine and I’m feeling good going into the game at the weekend.”

Hopper started in attack against Ipswich Town last weekend as the Shrimpers were beaten 3-1 in Sol Campbell’s first game in charge.

But Hopper is already enjoying working with the new Blues boss.

“The manager has come in with fresh ideas and he’s working us hard but it’s been good,” said Hopper.

“Everything is very detailed.”

And Hopper is also pleased to receive extra coaching from former Manchester United striker Andy Cole.

“The sessions have been enjoyable and he’s passing on lots of advice,” said Hopper.

“When someone with a career like he had says something you definitely take it on board.”
