SOUTHEND United manager Sol Campbell will not allow the forthcoming January transfer window to distract him ahead of the Shrimpers’ next few matches.

Campbell will be keen to bolster his squad when the window opens at the start of 2020.

But the former England international is not looking too far ahead at this stage.

“The window is going to be important going forward but we have to deal with what we have now,” said Campbell.

“We’ve got to deal with the team now and put a team together that can compete against Bolton at the weekend.

“January isn’t going anywhere but I’m just focusing on the games we have coming up right now.”

Campbell has been in charge of the Shrimpers since the end of October but is still waiting for his first League win.

Blues remain second from bottom in the League One table having triumphed just once in 21 outings so far this season.

But Campbell is keen for his side to keep believing things will soon start to change.

“We have to keep on believing because the performances are improving,” said Campbell.

“Saturday at Bolton is a big game but every game is a big game for us with the position we’re in.

“It would be great to get the win as a nice early Christmas present for the fans. I do feel like the performances are getting better but we have to get points.

“We have to get wins home and away and that’s everywhere we go, we can’t pick and choose.”

The Shrimpers drew 2-2 with Rotherham United at Roots Hall last time out and have since been boosted by the return of Charlie Kelman.

The 18-year-old striker, who had been out since September with an ankle problem, scored on his return to action for the under-23s at MK Dons on Tuesday.

And Campbell will be keeping an eye on the youngster’s progress as he bids to regain full fitness.

“We’ve got to assess things in training,” said Campbell.

“He will come in and we’ll see what he’s like before we make a decision.

“There are other players coming back as well so we’ll look at all scenarios and assess it as we go along.”
