PROMOTION-PUSHING Southend Saxons will be looking to end 2019 in style when they host Brentwood in London One North tomorrow.

Saxons are currently third in the standings, one place and four points clear of Brentwood.

But Jake O’Kill is keen to make the gap bigger as Southend look to secure their seventh win in eight games.

“It would be great to end the year on a high for the Saxons,” said O’Kill.

“The rest of the club have already shown us the way with some great wins last weekend and hopefully we’ll have a good crowd cheering us on at the Bridge so we can do similar.

“But Brentwood have come down from the league above and they are close to the top of the table too so this will be another difficult game.”

Southend won at Brenwood 32-8 back in September and O’Kill has been encouraged by the way things have come together for Josh Ward’s side since then.

“The season so far has been a positive one,” said O’Kill.

“We are going into the Christmas break near the top of the table and that is exactly where we were aiming to be at the start of the season.

“The win against Chingford last week was another step in the right direction. The state of their pitch was a real leveller in rugby terms and showed why they’ve managed to claim a few scalps higher above them in the league.”

However, Southend dug deep to triumph 26-8 and are now locked level on points with second-placed Colchester.

“The race for promotion is definitely picking up momentum with the top half of the table capable of upsetting anyone,” added O’Kill.
