BASILDON secured their first victory of the season, beating Billericay 28-10.

Despite the eventual outcome it was Billericay who began brightly as skipper Steve Butler released Robinson.

But just as he was about to go over he was denied by a great try saving tackle from the home side's full back.

The last-gasp interception sparked Basildon into life as their number eight created the game's opening try for the outside centre.

The fly half added the extras but Billericay hit back with a try of their own, as Atkinson scoring a try and Dave Harries kicking the conversion.

The referee then controversially ruled out a try from Goldsmith but immediately after the break Basildon regained the lead.

They then extended their advantage with some break away tries as Billericay could only score a penalty during the second half.

"It's hugely disappointing to lose any game but the manner in which we lost was hard to take," said Butler.

"We dominated the game in the first half but failed to take our chances, we really should have put the game to bed.

"Because we didn't do this it allowed Basildon to come back strongly after the break, and to be fair, Basildon played well as a team and deserved their win."

Canvey Island also bagged their first triumph of the campaign as they saw off Campion 28-7.

South Woodham Ferrers were in fine form too as they moved up to third in the table with a 43-8 win at struggling Crusaders, who are now bottom.
