SOUTHEND United suffered a 4-1 defeat at promotion rivals Nottingham Forest tonight.

During a miserable night for the Shrimpers top goalscorer Leon Clarke was also shown a red card midway through the second half for appearing to head-butt Luke Chambers.

The evening had began well for Blues though and they took the lead with Mark Gower blasting home a fantastic 20 yard shot in just the third minute of the match.

Forest equalised just before the break when Ian Breckin headed home from close range and they then took the lead in the 65th minute when an offside looking Nathan Tyson ran through to score.

Blues were then reduced to 10 men following Clarke's moment of madness and their hosts took full advantage with Junior Agogo bagging a brace in the closing stages.

Southend are now fifth in the table.
