SOUTHEND United manager Sol Campbell insists the Shrimpers are still fighting to stay up - despite their lack of activity in the transfer window.

Blues have allowed Tom Hopper, Simon Cox and Rob Kiernan to leave the club without bringing anyone in to bolster the squad.

But Campbell refuses to accept relegation is inevitable.

“Whatever happens, happens but you’ve got to give it your best shot and that’s key.

“Mathematically it’s not gone.

"Statistically it’s a difficult scenario and I get that but if that’s the case no-one would have gone to the moon.

“You’ve got to go for it and not hold back.

“There’s enough games for things to change or for a player to come through and start shining.”

Campbell has also seen loan signings Ethan Hamilton and Layton Ndukwu return to their parent club during January while Theo Robinson has headed back to Colchester United until the end of the season.

But Campbell - whose side head to Doncaster Rovers on Tuesday night - is still setting his sights on catching the teams above them.

“We have to keep believing and we will until it’s mathematically gone, said the 45-year-old.

“I’ll keep on fighting.

“I’ve always been like that as a player and if it’s there I’ll go for it.

“I want the players to keep on going and keep on believing.

“We’ll keep the spirits high and see what happens.

“Yes we might have some problems and people might go and others might come in but you have to deal with now.”

The Shrimpers are 12 points from safety but have yet to be beaten in 2020 and bagged just their second win of the League One season last time out at Accrington Stanley.
