JACK Giddens is the best goalkeeper in the Isthmian Premier League, according to East Thurrock United boss John Coventry.

Giddens is enjoying his second campaign with Rocks having made the move from neighbours Billericay Town.

While Giddens was unable to help East Thurrock stave off relegation from the National League South last term, the goalkeeper stayed at the Grayers Graphics Stadium and will be looking to keep Rocks among the challengers for the play-off places when second-placed Folkestone Invicta make the trip to south Essex tomorrow.

“I brought Jack in and played him in the National League South,” said Coventry.

“He was a good goalkeeper there and he chose to come down with us.

“I think Jack has been brilliant for us.

“Not only is he a fantastic goalkeeper, he is excellent to have at your club and he does everything properly.

“He would get my vote for being the best goalkeeper in the division, but a lot of other managers would say that about their goalkeeper.”

Giddens made a number of stunning saves as Rocks claimed a point after a goalless draw with Kingstonian on Wednesday.

Ryan Scott also had a headed goal controversially ruled out, but Coventry was keen to praise his side.

“We were brilliant and, having played them only 11 days earlier, we knew what we were up against,” added Coventry.

“They are a good side and probably the best team we have played this season when it comes to going forward.

“We had a game plan but it’s a waste of time if the players take no notice of it.

“The players executed the game plan and I couldn’t ask anymore of them.

“Jack was magnificent by making a couple of saves when he needed to, although he was protected well by those in front of him.

“We created chances ourselves and scored a goal that shouldn’t have been disallowed.

“None of their players were appealing for a foul on the goalkeeper, but I was pleased with a point.”

And Coventry will be hoping for another positive result against Folkestone this weekend.

“If we want to get anywhere near the play-offs, we need to get more points against teams around us,” admitted Coventry, whose side are three points adrift of the top five.

“Our situation has not been great this season and our squad has always been thin.

“But it’s the same bunch of lads giving everything for the football club and I am so pleased for them.”
