GILLINGHAM boss Steve Evans admitted to feeling sorry for Southend United boss Sol Campbell following his side's 1-0 win at Roots Hall tonight.

The Gills condemned Blues to a fourth defeat in succession.

But Evans had words of sympathy for Campbell at the final whistle.

"I feel sorry for Sol Campbell," said Evans.

"No other manager wants to say it because he's the best known manager outside the Premier League probably.

"But I feel sorry for him having to come in here after what he endured at Macclesfield.

"He's got them grafting for him and he's got them working hard.

"He's probably been on the wrong end of some results like tonight too."

Connor Ogilvie bagged the only goal of the game for the Gills midway through the second half against the Shrimpers.

But Evans was frustrated with how Gillingham started the game.

"We were really poor in the first half and really disjointed," said Evans.

"I thought we were being a bit disrespectful towards Southend because of where they are in the League but I’ve watched enough footage to see these kids Sol has got can play a bit.

"We made a change at half-time but the first five or 10 minutes of the second half wasn’t much of an improvement.

"But we had a few harsh words when there was a break and from there on in we dominated proceedings apart from the odd counter attack.

"We missed some half chances to kill the game and they missed a chance at the end when we switched off.

"But we got the win and at this stage of the season that’s all that matters."
