SOL Campbell insists he is enjoying the challenge at Southend United.

The Shrimpers boss has often cut a forlorn and frustrated figure during the past few weeks after failing to add to his small squad.

But Campbell has no plans to walk away and will continue to try and get Blues back on the front foot in difficult circumstances.

“I’m actually enjoying this challenge here and it’s a good learning curve for me,” said the former England international.

“It’s not easy when you can’t get anyone in and have injuries but you have to deal with it and try and win some games.

“But my family lifts me and I love football so I’m enjoying it.”

However, Campbell is facing an extremely difficult task at Roots Hall after seeing eight players leave the club during the January transfer window.

And, with the squad also being hit by injuries to Mark Oxley, Nathan Ralph and Harry Lennon, Campbell feels any manager would find it tough going in his shoes.

“You could go to any manager and they would struggle if you took three or four of their main starters out of their team, even if they had spent £250million,” said Campbell.

“We’ve lost about 10 players through injuries or being sold and it’s tough going.

“But it’s also a learning curve for me having so many injuries and not being able to bring anyone in while also losing players.”

Campbell has been forced to field several of the Shrimpers youngsters in recent weeks and has seen his side slump to four defeats in succession.

But the former Arsenal defender remains determined to turn things around.

“I’m here working and trying to get things moving,” said Campbell.

“I’m working day to day to make sure we can compete in every game and try to win some games before the end of the season.”

Relegation is now a foregone conclusion for the second from bottom Shrimpers. But Campbell is keen to restore some pride by picking up points against Burton Albion at Roots Hall on Saturday.

“Hopefully we can stick one of the chances away and win the game,” said the 45-year-old.

“But Burton are a passing side who move the ball quickly so we’ll have to be ready.”
