SID Broomfield worked tirelessly to build Southend United’s current Roots Hall home.
But his nephew David Broomfield has revealed the legendary former Shrimpers groundsman knew the time was right for the club to move grounds.
Blues have been at Roots Hall since the mid 1950s.
But David said his uncle, who died aged 94 in March 2019, would have welcomed the news that the Shrimpers had edged nearer a move to Fossetts Farm.
David said: “Sid loved Roots Hall but he knew the club had to move on because it’s falling apart really.
“But on behalf of the Broomfield family if would be great if a stand at the new ground could be named after him so he could make the move with them in spirit.”
