SOUTHEND United legend Ian Benjamin still remains involved with the Shrimpers.

The former Blues striker, who scored 38 goals in 139 games while with Blues, was brought into the scouting set up by former Southend boss Chris Powell.

And it is a role Benjamin still enjoys at Roots Hall.

“I had been doing some scouting for Southend up until coronavirus brought the season to a halt,” said Benjamin.

“I’d been covering the Midlands and it’s not easy.

“I made one mistake with one player but other than that I’ve been happy with my recommendations.

“Some of the good players can be out of the club’s budget at the time so then you go down to the next group and the quality might not be as good.

“Players like the lad (Lyle) Taylor who went to Charlton cost good money.

“But if the club can stay up that would be fantastic.”

Blues sit second from bottom in the League One standings, 16 points from safety with just nine games to go.

Doubts remain on whether or not the season will be completed due to the coronavirus pandemic.

But, whatever the outcome, Benjamin is keen for Sol Campbell to stay in charge.

“Hopefully Sol Campbell stays because I think you can see signs of what he can do,” said Benjamin.

“He’s had to do it in difficult circumstances too.”

The Shrimpers have not played since beating Bristol Rovers at Roots Hall at the start of March.
