ELVIS Bwomono is proud to have been voted Southend United’s player of the year in an online Echosport poll.

The reliable right-back picked up close to 80 per cent of the votes.

And the 21-year-old was pleased to be recognised by the club’s supporters.

“It’s been a hard season on and off the field but for the fans to see me as player of the year by quite a distance is very good,” said Bwomono.

“I’m still only 21 so I’m pleased with how many games I’ve had and I’d like to think I’ve been quite consistent in them too.”

Bwomono made 39 appearances for Blues last season, more than any other player.

But the defender, who came through the ranks at Roots Hall, has found it strange being out of action since March due to the coronavirus pandemic.

“It’s been weird and it’s the longest period I’ve ever had off from football,” said Bwomono.

“It’s tough times for everyone but I’m trying to stay as fit as possible but we have no idea when we will be back and that’s a weird feeling.”

Bwomono’s contract with Blues has been triggered for another year.

And he feels the Shrimpers can have no complaints at being relegated on a points per game ratio.

“The table didn’t lie for us and we’ll be in League Two,” he added.
