SOUTHEND United have received more than 60 applicants for the vacant managerial role at Roots Hall.

Echosport takes a closer look at those who are interested in replacing Sol Campbell.

PETER BUTLER: Butler made 167 appearances during a successful four-year spell playing for the Shrimpers and is currently in charge of Liberia’s national team.

Butler has also taken charge of Botswana’s national team.

MARK BEARD: Beard, who made 151 appearances for the Shrimpers, is currently in charge of Brighton & Hove Albion’s under 18 team.

Beard has been with Brighton since 2015 and led the Seagulls to the fifth round of the FA Youth Cup last season during a run which also saw them win away at Manchester United.

Beard’s side also went seven months without defeat while nine of his players have now signed professional contracts.

STEVEN REID: The 39-year-old lined up for Millwall, Blackburn Rovers and West Bromwich Albion as a player along with Republic of Ireland before embarking on a coaching career.

Reid has been first team coach at Reading and Crystal Palace before also coaching at AFC Wimbledon.

The former midfielder has also worked at West Bromwich Albion, where he had a spell as caretaker manager, as well as Scotland’s national side.

STEVE TILSON: Tilson guided Blues to back-to-back promotion during a seven-year spell in charge of the club which ended in 2010.

Financial problems led to the Shrimpers returning to League Two before his departure, but Tilson is keen on a Roots Hall return.

Since leaving Blues, Tilson has been in charge of Lincoln City, Canvey Island and C&K Basildon Ladies.

CRAIG FAGAN: The 37-year-old has impressed as Blues’ under 23 coach since being appointed at the beginning of last season.

Fagan had previously been coaching at Hull City and also worked with Blues’ youngsters voluntarily at the end of his own playing career which included spells in the Premier League with Hull City, Derby County and Birmingham City.

MICHAEL JOLLEY: The 43-year-old was in charge of Grimsby Town between March 2018 and November 2019.

Jolley has also managed AFC Eskilstuna in Sweden and spent three years working with Burnley’s under 23 side.

He has also coached at Crystal Palace, Nottingham Forest, Lincoln City and Crewe Alexandra and is a graduate of Cambridge University with a masters in economics.

KEVIN MAHER: Maher made 455 appearances for Blues during a 10-year spell at Roots Hall which also saw him skipper the side to back-to-back promotions.

The 43-year-old also spent four years with the Shrimpers’ under 23 team before becoming first team coach at Bristol Rovers last summer.

JOHN McGREAL: McGreal’s four-year spell in charge of Colchester United ended earlier this month.

McGreal led Colchester into the League Two play-offs last season but saw his side edged out by Exeter City in the semi-finals.

The former centre-back lined up for Tranmere Rovers, Colchester United and Burnley during his own playing career and worked within the U’s youth set up before being named boss in 2016.

DARREN CURRIE: The former winger has been in been in charge of Barnet since December 2018.

He led the Bees into the National League play-offs this season and is the bookmakers’ favourite for the job.

Others to apply include Dean Austin, Ian Hendon, Paul Robinson, Bryan Hughes , Luis Boa Morte and Fabio Grosso.
