MICHAEL Klass is keen to make this his breakthrough season after signing a new deal at Southend United.

The 21-year-old has signed a new 12 month deal with the Shrimpers.

And Klass is determined to start featuring more regularly at Roots Hall.

"It’s been frustrating playing here and there and coming off the bench," said Klass, who has been with Blues since 2017.

"I’ve never really got into a flow or had a run of games.

"I feel like this season is a good opportunity to kick on and try and make that happen."

Klass has made 15 appearances for the Shrimpers but failed to feature for the first team last term.

The midfielder instead spent time on loan with National League Bromley.

But he is pleased to be staying with Blues.

"I’m over the moon to have finally got the contract sorted," said Klass.

"There was a stage where I was a bit in the dark about things and I didn’t know what was going to go on, especially with everything that’s been happening in the world.

"I was a bit worried but I’m very pleased to have got it sorted."

Klass started Tuesday night's 4-0 win at Great Wakering Rovers as Blues kicked off their pre-season campaign with a convincing win.

And he is already enjoying working for new Shrimpers boss Mark Molesley.

"Training has been tough but he seems like a really good manager," said Klass.

"He has got everyone working hard and the players have been enjoying training a lot.

"Him and his staff have been really good."

Klass, who joined Blues after being released by Queens Park Rangers, will be eager to catch the eye of Molesley.

And he will be doing all he can to make the most of any opportunities coming his way "I need to work hard and make sure I take my chance if I get one," said Klass, whose new deal includes the option of a further year.

"I need to make sure I take any chances with both hands.

"I don’t want to be getting games here and there.

"I want to try and get a run of them now to show everyone what I can do."

The Shrimpers will be back in League Two next term after enduring a season of struggle last time around.

But Klass feels Blues cannot afford to keep looking back on what has already happened.

"We have to put last year behind us and look forward," said Klass.

"We will work hard this season and see where it takes us.

"Last season was very tough for everyone but everything seems sorted now and hopefully we can push on and do well this season."
