SOUTHEND United defender Miles Mitchell-Nelson wants his dominant display against Hullbridge Sports to be the sign of things to come.
Mitchell-Nelson scored Blues’ first goal in the 3-0 win and also helped Mark Molesley’s side pick up their second successive clean sheet.
But Mitchell-Nelson is determined to build on the performance as he strives to secure more first team appearances.
“My aim is to be in the first team,” said the 19-year-old centre-back.
“I want to be in from the start and I’m working my hardest.
“I’m trying to push on and want to be the first name on the team-sheet if I can.”
Mitchell-Nelson, who is about to enter his fourth season with the Shrimpers, started five of Blues’ last six games in the previous campaign.
And he was pleased to continue preparations for the forthcoming season with victory against Hullbridge.
“I thought the boys played well,” said Mitchell-Nelson.
“We’re trying to implement the new things the manager has been teaching us throughout pre-season.
“He wants energetic, fast paced football and we did that and played well.”
Mitchell-Nelson played his part at both ends of the pitch and broke the deadlock when he headed home a right wing cross from Lewis Gard.
And the defender is keen to keep on hitting the back of the net.
“I’m trying to get more goals because it’s important,” said Mitchell-Nelson.
“When we’re coming up for set pieces we’re coming up to score.
“Scoring goals also means you’re playing more of a part and it’s a great feeling too.
“It’s pre-season with a new manager so we’re all looking to impress and it was good to get the first goal.”
Blues have now won their first two pre-season friendlies.
And Mitchell-Nelson is enjoying life under new Shrimpers boss Mark Molesley.
“It’s been great and I’ve liked every minute,” said Mitchell-Nelson.
“He’s teaching us new things and helping us to be more attacking when we’re on the ball.
“We’re taking on that information and we’re putting it into our game.
“He’s also been talking about clean sheets and our defensive mentality.
“No matter who you’re playing it’s good to have got two clean sheets in a row, especially for me as a centre-back.”
