SOUTHEND United winger Eren Kinali is setting his sights high this season.

The 20-year-old winger has scored in two of the three Shrimpers’ warm up fixtures.

And Kinali is keen for his fine form to be the sign of things to come.

“Scoring two goals in three games is a great way to start and it’s very pleasing but I’m willing to do much more,” said Kinali.

“My main hope for this season is promotion and I think it’s where the club needs to be.

“Personally, I want to gain the manager’s trust and start as many games as possible, creating a positive impact for the team.”

Kinali, who came through the youth ranks at Roots Hall, broke into the first team towards the end of last season, making six appearances for the Shrimpers.

But the hard-working winger saw his progress cut short by the curtailment of the season due to the coronavirus pandemic which also led to Kinali and his team-mates having to spend five months away from the club.

“It was very frustrating to be away from playing while being on good form but people’s health and safety comes first and is more important,” said Kinali.

“However it is great to be back and enjoying the beautiful game again.”

Blues also opted to change managers during lockdown with Mark Molesley coming in to replace Sol Campbell in charge. And Kinali is already enjoying working with the new Shrimpers boss.

“It’s been a very positive change and the manager has already made a great impact,” said Kinali.

“He’s great to work with as he reflects the passion he has on to us.

Blues, who will be back in League Two this season, have won all three of their pre-season friendlies so far with Kinali being among the most impressive performers. The winger netted against Great Wakering Rovers before also scoring with a scorching shot as the Shrimpers fought back to beat Charlton Athletic 3-2 last time out.

And Kinali is happy with how things are starting to shape up.

“We’ve started well which is always a positive sign for the season ahead,” said Kinali.

“The friendlies show what we’re capable of and how hungry we are as a team as well.

“Pre season has been great too. I just love the feeling of coming back to football and being back with the team, especially after being away for so long.”

Blues will continue their pre-season campaign with another behind closed doors clash this weekend before kicking off their season at Gillingham in the first round of the Carabao Cup on Saturday September 5.
