SOUTHEND United Ladies side are through to the first qualifying round of the FA Cup after securing an exciting victory against Houghton Ladies.

The Shrimpers triumphed 3-1 on penalties after the tie had ended 1-1 at Garon Park.

And boss Lewis Dodds is now looking forward to facing Peterborough Northern Star in the next round.

“It was an excellent performance and we’re so pleased to have got through,” said Dodds.

“We are now through to the first qualifying round where we have been drawn away to Peterborough Northern Star Ladies of the Eastern Region Womens League.

“The tie will be played at the start of October and we’re looking forward to it.

“We have faced Eastern Region opponents in friendlies and local cup games in past seasons so we will take into consideration how those sides play.

“Between now and the next round we will work hard focusing on this game and make sure we are ready to take on any challenges set in front of us.”

Southend’s success sparked wild celebrations from the squad at the end of the game.

And Cristina Fragnito, who scored the Shrimpers’ goal, was thrilled to help Blues triumph in memorable fashion.

“Winning the game felt incredible,” said Fragnito.

“I was ecstatic that all our efforts had finally paid off.

“It was the icing on the cake to score a goal at such a pinnacle point of the match as well.

“The whole team running towards me cheering and congratulating me, the supporters shouting and screaming in disbelief was a feeling that gave me goosebumps.

“It’s a feeling I won’t forget and winning on penalties felt the same too.

“It was a special day for myself and the club and I cannot wait for the next round now.”

Those sentiments were echoed by Shrimpers goalkeeper Klaudia Zajac who lined up between the sticks for the first time in her career.

“Going to penalties was exciting but scary at the same time,” said Zajac.

“However, it still gave us a chance to win the game.

“ For me it was a scary experience as normally I'm a defender and Sunday was my first time as a goalkeeper.

“ This is the first time the squad has faced a competitive penalty shootout as well.

“Managing to save the last penalty was brilliant but we all played our part well and we deserved the win.”

The game was watched by a good attendance, the majority of which were supporting the home-side.

And Blues midfielder Molly Johnson felt the supporters definitely played a part.

“Having a crowd watching and supporting pushed us on,” said Johnson.

“It was tense but we battled hard and got the result we all felt we deserved.”
