OLI Coker insists it was a dream come true to make his first team debut for Southend United.

The 17-year-old midfielder played the final 38 minutes of Tuesday night’s 3-0 defeat to Portsmouth in the EFL Trophy.

And the youngster was delighted to be handed the first senior appearance of his career.

“It was a really special experience for me and it was nice to get on the pitch,” said Coker.

“It was nice to get some minutes and I’ve been at the club for eight years now so it was brilliant to play for the club I’ve been at for ages.

“As soon as I came into the building I’ve always dreamed about playing for the first team and I was probably dreaming about it before then too.

“I think every boy wants to grow up and play for their local club.”

Coker, a former Greensward School pupil, grew up supporting the Shrimpers.

And he enjoyed his debut, despite the final score-line.

“It was a difficult game to come into it and Portsmouth are obviously a decent side,” said Coker.

“But I thought I came on and played well.

“I had some good touches but there was one loose pass which wasn’t good enough from me.

“I’m learning but Portsmouth were quicker on the ball I think.”

Coker has impressed for Blues’ under 18 and under 23 sides already this season.

But he is eager to try and build on his debut.

“I want to try and get a League game under my belt now and that’s what I’ll be working towards,” said Coker.

“It was class to come on and it’s made me even hungrier to want to play again.

“It’s my local team and I’m a local boy.

“I’ve watched them for ages so it’s great to be playing here now.”
