HOCKEY: Southend & Benfleet’s first team suffered a 6-0 defeat against Wapping thirds.

Southend & Benfleet rallied in the second half but skipper Chloe Syvrett took a blow to the head.

Defenders Nina Dabbs and Charley Edwards were jointly awarded player of the match.

It was a much better afternoon for S&B’s second side as they beat Upminster’s fourths 1-0 with Georgia Middleton scoring the only goal of the game.

Neve Harrison was awarded the player of the match.

There was also success for Southend & Benfleet’s third side who beat London Royals 3-0.

Claire King, Mia Edwards and Lucy Redfern got the goals while Edwards also won player of the match again for her silky skills in midfield. S&B’s fourth side lost 2-1 at Witham.

Aileen Smith put Southend & Benfleet in front but Witham hit back to grab the victory.

Charlotte Smith was named player of the match.

Elsewhere, Southend & Benfleet under 10 and under 12 girls’ and boys’ teams were back on the hockey pitch at a tournament hosted by Old Southendians. The U10s girls played well with newcomer Bethany Walls scoring against Southend. The U10s boys won both matches, with Henry Pownceby scoring a hat-trick. The U12s girls were narrowly beaten by Southend 2-1 while the U12s boys won their matches convincingly.
