MIKE Jackson felt an early double change was needed to help Tranmere Rovers become more of an attacking threat against Southend United on Saturday.

Jackson brought on both Sam Smith and Calum MacDonald on the half hour mark at Prenton Park.

And he was pleased to see the tactical alterations enable his side to triumph 2-0 against the bottom of the table Blues.

“We started OK, but we weren’t being enough of an attacking threat,” Jackson told the club’s official website.

“I had to try and make a call and it worked today.

“I spoke to the two lads I had to take off and it was nothing to do with their performance, we just had to try and change the dynamic of the game.”

The victory pushed Rovers, who were relegated alongside Blues last season, up to 16th in the League Two standings.

And the 46-year-old was delighted to grab all three points.

“I’m delighted for the group; they needed that win with what’s going on at the moment,” said Jackson.

“It’s an important result for us and we’re made up with it.

“We know the performance can be better, but it’s a good starting point for us and that’s the main thing.”
