PORT Vale boss John Askey felt his side’s win at Southend United was the most comfortable he has ever enjoyed in charge.

Askey, who has been Vale boss since February 2019, guided Vale to a 2-0 victory at Roots Hall.

But the 55-year-old was disappointed not to win by a greater margin.

“We were comfortable throughout but until you get the goal you’re always a bit nervy thinking they might break away and get a penalty or a lucky shot in,” said Askew.

“But I think that’s as comfortable as we’ve been since I’ve been at the club and it could have been six or seven.”

Tom Pope bagged both of Vale’s goals in the wins, the first of which was the 150th of his career.

And Askey was full of praise for the experienced forward.

“For me he looks fitter this season then he did last and if we keep crossing ball like that he will keep getting goals,” said Askey.

“He did well in his first game back but I think the second came too early for him.

“Theo (Robinson) has come in done well so he’s had to bide his time but that was the best way to respond.”
